There's nothing quite like a great big bowl of chilli con carne when you're in the mood. The spicy mix of meat and beans is one of the most comforting there is and if there's a zingy salsa on the side it's even better still. In fact, it's such a versatile dish that Perth's many Mexican takeaways are starting to use it in lots of different ways and other types of restaurants are including it in their dishes too. So we've been out searching for both the classic chilli as well as variations on the theme. Here's what we found.
1. Chilli Con Carne - Pancho's Mexican Villa
There's always some debate about whether it should be "chili" or "chilli" and at Pancho's Mexican Villa they're firmly in favour of the latter. But there's no argument about just how fantastic their version of the classic is. The meat's cooked long and low alongside the plump beans, with just enough heat to bring out the flavours. Then it's served on a bed of Mexican rice and topped with both sour cream and melted cheese. Plus there are finely chopped tomatoes and a scattering of corn chips for that extra bit of crunch. It all adds up to a king among chillies!
2. Texas Beef Burrito - Salsa's
If you're always on the lookout for new taste sensations from burritos then you should be hightailing it down here. They call it Texas Beef Burrito but it's a chilli con carne wrap in all but name. It's a hunger-busting mix of prime ground beef with black beans – some chefs believe these are the more authentic types of bean to use and authenticity is certainly something they've cracked at Salsa's. There's also fragrant lime and coriander rice, lettuce, cheese and ranch dressing. Their finishing touch of salsa fresca makes sure it's like a fiesta on your tongue.
3. Chili Con Carne Burger - Taco Burger
Down at Taco Burger there's a real treat waiting for you. They call it "The Triple C" for short because it's the chilli, cheese and sour cream that really transform this burger into something out of the ordinary. The burger itself is served in a brioche bun but it's the chilli on top that's the star of the show. Made from Australian beef with bacon, beans, hot peppers and garlic, it's also sprinkled with finely chopped spring onions to help bring out its fieriness.
4. Mexican Pizza - Allegro
OK, so it's not chilli con carne precisely but most of the elements are there on this spicy pizza treat from Allegro. So, for example, you can expect to find chilli, Bolognese sauce and hot peppers along with spicy sausage and onion. Then there's the topping of melted cheese that helps to pull all the flavours together and adds an extra savoury touch. You've heard of a spaghetti western, well we reckon this is the pizza equivalent to win you over.
Perth's the place for some of the hottest variations on the classic chilli con carne right now and Deliveroo's waiting to bring them to your door.
