Succulent meat, crispy pitas and zingy sides, there's nothing quite like a kebab. And here in Australia, kebabs are taking off. There's all sorts of places in Sydney offering up their own takes on this classic – from the vegetarian to the Greek-inspired. We've rounded up a few of our favourites, proving that this simple skewer deserves far better than a polystyrene box on a late night out.
1. Chicken Shish Plate, Sabbaba
Serving up the best in Middle Eastern food, Sabbaba should be your first port of call for the taste of a truly classic shish kebab. Succulent marinated chicken is served with all the trimmings – from fresh, herby tabouli to sweet and nutty tahini, hummus and babaganoush – this platter is a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach.
2. Crispy Pork Belly Yeeros, The Civic Hotel
Offering an alternative to traditional Greek lamb yeeros, the crispy pork belly version here at The Civic Hotel is a meal not to be messed with. Sweet, grilled pork is served up with crispy fries and a spicy mustard mayo. But the real cherry on top is their addictive chipotle apple salsa – you won't quickly forget this saucy side.

3. Duck and Chicken Kebabs, Aki's
Brave new & contemporary Indian creations @akisindian ! Tonight's entrée, duck & chicken kebabs with black garlic, date, plum and ginger jus. A solid dish! #indianfood #👌👍 #akisindianrestaurant #greatservice #greatfood #sydneyfood #goodfood #myfaveats #sydneyeats #diningout #myeats #duck #chicken #kebabs #flavoursome #spicesgalore #delish #unconventional #contemporary #foodlover #foodhunting #foodpic #foodgram #foodtales #instafood #instagourmet #afavouriteplace #eatingmywaythroughsydney #😊👍
If you're feeling the kebab love, why not start your meal with one? And Aki's Duck and Chicken Kebab starter is a tough act to follow. Cooked until juicy, these grills are full of lip-smacking flavour that's only jazzed up by the black garlic, date, plum and ginger jus. Try saying that with your mouth full.

4. Eggplant and cauliflower wrap, Zaida
Though traditionally defined as grilled meat, kebabs can cater for the veggies too. Take Zaida's grilled eggplant and crisp-fried cauliflower wrap. Just as hearty as their meaty alternatives, this kebab-style wrap is topped with lettuce, tomato, onion – but you can also take it up and add ground spices and herb-spiked tabbouleh and with sweet tahini dressing too. Delicious for everyone, veggie or not.

5. Bharrah kebab, Manjits @ The Wharf
This is my new favourite restaurant in Sydney, @manjitsatthewharf is the most phenomenal and stunning in fine modern Indian Cuisine. Huge thanks to the venue for the invite to review - I have a massive feature article coming but thought I would start with a teaser. This is the Bharrah Kebab - lamb cutlets marinated in yoghurt, garlic, ginger, lemon juice and red spices. Definitely requires sunglasses to eat ;). No competition - best lamb cutlets I have ever eaten. Mind blowing. Stay tuned for my article in the next week (if Internet ever comes back on following the storm 4 days ago). #mealforameal #fcba #indianfood #zomato #kingstreetwharf
Finally, we couldn't give you the cream of the kebab-crop without a tasty Indian alternative. Head to Manjits for their distinctive take on this grilled delight. Juicy lamb cutlets are simply marinated in smooth yogurt, garlic, ginger, tangy lemon juice and a secret blend of spices to create a fiery starter that will more than whet your appetite.
