"Throw some shrimp on the barbie, mate!" Global stereotypes might not be trustworthy most of the time, but let's face it, when it comes to throwing shrimps on barbies, we do do it pretty well (not that we're really up for debate).
So, let's go on a patriotic journey of seafood in Sydney. Here are the best seafood restaurants with the best Australian seafood because Deliveroo only deal with the best, you know?
This restaurant has a 'Fish of the Day' item on its menu, so you're guaranteed the best catch whatever day of the week when you're feeling peckish for fish. Young Alfred takes tasty seafood and gives it a Mediterranean twist for some of the best Italian takeaway in Sydney. If you prefer to savour your seafood in a more pizza-based way, then try the Bocca which is topped with king prawns, clams, mussels and octopus. Fish is featured in several of the tasty entrées too. Go for the cured ocean trout with fennel, capers and horseradish, or the grilled king prawns with sweet corn, chilli and saffron dressing. But the coolest fish dish here has got to be the squid ink linguine, because black pasta is never not awesome. Young Alfred's version is served with king prawns, chilli, garlic and citrus butter. Yum.
2. Ume Burger
Okay, so a fish burger might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of seafood, or burgers for that matter. But Ume Burger offer something different and delicious that we believe is very worthy of this list: the fish katsu burger. This tasty Japanese burger (yeah, we know it's not the first thing on your mind when you think of Japanese food either, but bear with us) is made with hand crumbed fish fillet, Japanese tartare iceberg lettuce and cheese. Go on, give this weird-sounding, delicious-tasting burger a go - we promise you won't regret it!
3. Flying Fish
Well, we can't really mention fish without mentioning fish and chips because when you get a craving for a bit of battered fish, no other sort of seafood is able to measure up. So be sure to turn to Flying Fish in your hour of need, not only because they serve up some fairly amazing fish and chips, but because they're probably also the classiest purveyors of battered hake you'll find in Sydney. Of course, if you did want to branch out, Flying Fish are some of the best at their craft so you can't go too wrong with any of their dishes. The garlic king prawns are particularly fantastic.
Fishbowl is where (clue's in the name) a bowl of fishy Hawaiian/Japanese deliciousness is served up just the way you like it. If you haven't tried Poke - a yummy fishy salad that is an essential healthy, summery lunch pick – yet, now's the time, and you don't even have to leave your house to get it either. We know, we're just too good. Almost as good as Fishbowl's grub which includes the Tokyo Fleming-O with coriander, ginger, golden beetroot, nori, pink radish with miso tahini, a spicy shoyu dressing and topped with crispy shallots. Have it served with your choice of fish, including tiger prawns, tuna, tofu, a happy half and half of salmon and tuna, or be a rebel and opt for sesame poached chicken.
Well, we can't mention fish and not talk about sushi. And we can't talk about sushi and not mention Zushi, the restaurant that serves what is probably some of the prettiest sushi in Sydney. We're all about their lunchtime sets, that choice of tasty sushi, grilled salmon, fried chicken or mixed tempura served with rice and salad. They're also the people you need to turn to if you're expecting guests and need them to know you accept nothing but the best sushi. Zushi's platters come with up to 60 pieces of perfectly crafted sushi and sashimi, so you can be the 'host with the most' without so much as looking at the kitchen. Fabulous.
