5 Melbourne restaurants you need to try now

Melbourne has no shortage of incredible restaurants. From classic burgers to vibrant healthy dishes and authentic Asian eats, we've got a little bit of everything here. So if you're looking for inspired food to jazz up your evening takeaway, Australia's capital of food is the place for you.

Here are five of Melbourne's most popular spots, all guaranteed to leave a smile on your face.

1. Misschu

With a 'high-end food at a low-end price tag' motto and a unique 'tuckshop' concept, Misschu offers a playful Vietnamese menu and young, friendly vibe. Nahji Chu, the founder, cottoned onto the modern desire to eat tasty, healthy food that's big on flavour yet light and wholesome. Her passion for design is evident throughout the Misschu experience, but the standout feature is obviously the fresh, vibrant food with its exciting flavours.

2. Sauced Pasta Bar

The idea behind Sauced is a simple one – they're all about customisable pasta. Just pick your sauce from a list of 14 favourites – ranging from a classic Aglio Olio with olive oil, garlic, chilli and parsley to the full meatball extravaganza – then you pick your pasta style and that's it. If you are feeling virtuous, sub out your standard pasta for zucchini strips or spelt spaghetti. And the good news doesn't stop there – you've got a choice of 20 extras, so you can top away to your heart's desire.

Nosh invites you to wholesome, nourishing food that's good for you without wussing out on flavour. Everything created in the kitchen here is designed to be balanced in taste and nutrition. And these innovative Asian-inspired dishes combine fresh, local ingredients, so you know you're getting the real deal. We love their create-your-own poke bowls, putting the healthy power in your hands.

4. Foxes Den

It's all about chicken at the Foxes Den. Sourced locally from Geelong, Foxes Den chicken is free-range and organic, simply roasted and served with a choice of seasonal salads and sides. And it's their whole, half or quarter chickens that steal the show here. Get yours plated up with a grilled greens salad, or a zingy Carrot and Harissa salad, packing in pearl barley, goats' cheese and mint.

5. Andrew's Hamburgers

A key player of the Melbourne foodie scene since 1939, Andrew's Hamburgers come with a side order of heritage. Holding their own among the new rash of gourmet burger bars, the traditional burgers and old-school vibe at Andrew's keeps the people coming back for more. Their most popular offering is the classic Andrew's burger – with a recipe unchanged since 1939 – where you'll find lettuce, onion, egg, bacon, tomato, double cheese and tomato sauce. This wonder has stood the test of time and emerged victorious.
